March/April Visions

Always stoked to see people out there getting footage, even if it's just park stuff it's fun to see what dudes are up to on the local front.

Conor McGivern is one of the best behind the camera (also rips in front of it) these days and I'm genuinely giddy with glee whenever he posts the stuff that he's filmed and edited.

Peep out the Treevisions site as well as Treevisons on Vimeo for more goodness.

The newest thing he's put online is this Super Skatepark montage and it's viewable in two parts on the APB Vimeo page, check out the hot shit right here:

Part One.

Part Two.

Whoa!
Some serious shredding going on.
Super psyched on D. Lee with the air drumming skills.

Speaking of local shralping, Darin also happens to be sitting on some gold that he's captured with his new HD camera that will blow your mind and should be dropping soon.
Hopefully this new burst of footage will inspire more heads to get out there and document more stuff at more spots.
Get some!

Adrian Adrid @ Make-A-Wish L.A.

Adrian keeps killing everything, I thought you knew!
My man better not be on flow status very much longer or we might have to send a couple big braddahs from Da Hui up there to straighten Dune and Jason Lee out.

Peep Adrian destroyong the Make-A-Wish demo at Hollenbeck Plaza in L.A. in the video below courtesy of Stereo.

You know all that shit was too easy.

Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal

Don't usually cover music stuff on these pages but I am so bummed to hear that one of the greatest MCs to ever rock the mic in hip hop history has passed away.
Gang Starr's Guru (real name Keith Elam) lost his battle with cancer yesterday and left us way too soon at the age of 43.

A lot of skateboarders for the most part have always been huge Gang Starr fans or at least familiar with their music, which has appeared in many skate videos from 1992 or so all the way up until the present day.

I know that Gang Starr was a huge part of the soundtrack to skating here in Honolulu in the mid-nineties, Guru and Premier were always heard pounding over the speakers at every skate contest or coming out of many a skater's car stereo, and for sure DJs were spinning a ton of Gang Starr out on the town at spots like Valentino's in Waikiki where many local skaters tended to hang out.

Guru is without a doubt one of the top 10 MCs of all time and I don't think this is disputable.
Personally this bums me out way more than when I heard that Tupac died, or when Biggie was killed.
Let me put it to you like this, no disrespect to either one of them but I don't own a single Tupac or Biggie CD but I have every Gang Starr CD from when they came out until they broke up.

Anyway, I'm gonna be bumping Gang Starr 24/7 for the rest of the week.
REST IN PEACE, GURU!
Hope you're Above The Clouds still rockin' it.

Koston was the first one I ever heard with Gang Starr in a video part.
Amazing.

Julien in SkyPager is a classic for many reasons. That gap to tail across the driveway, holy shit. The song is dope as fuck too. Guru jumps in at the 1:48 mark.

Also, on a related note, how dope was this Jeff Pang "Pang Starr" graphic that Andy Howell dropped around the same time SkyPager came out?

Back to the videos:

Eric Ricks had a Pro Files section in 411 Video Magazine number 6, shit was deep.

Big Kenny Hughes put in work in Element's Third Eye View.

Muska voiced Steve Olson's intro in Shorty's Fulfill The Dream but Guru ripped a duet with Wu-Tang's Inspectah Deck and it starts 55 seconds in.

Josh Kalis' part in the DC Video is timeless, like the G-A-N-G to the Starr, son.
Respect!

Japan In February: Tokyo Part One

After spending an awesome five days in Osaka me and the Mrs. hopped on the bullet train to Tokyo, appropriately enough it was Valentine's Day.

This shit is quick.

Straight to dinner with Masa and Miko. Of course I had a couple of bags full of treats for them.

Next day the weather was shitty so I cruised around while the little lady was at work. They painted this hard to reach bank in Shinjuku. This thing is steep as fuck and pretty rough, props to anybody who has done anything on this bad boy.

Waiting for Masa to wake up I found this little bar in Shimokitazawa that I forgot I went to before, Hawaiian flavor.

Masa was finally awake at the crack of noon. We went to the punk rock spot that his homie owns to use the Internet to find directions to the skate park we were going to check out that day.

Found it. Had to drive out a little in the cut for this one but it was worth it.

Not super great at reading Japanese but I think they wanted people to keep the door closed or something because it was seriously cold.

Didn't matter, it was freezing in that piece anyway. There's a couple of mini ramps to keep warm on though.

And this monster. Get your cradle on.

Masa, Yoshi and Ko-chan literally chilling.

Masa went backside.

Ko-chan got busy.

Yoshi got gnarly.

I dropped out of the sky.

That's more like it. Must be the gloves.

This little dude busted his grill pretty bad.

They literally had to pick up his tooth from the flatbottom. Think his night was over? Think again. Little man took a breather for a minute and went straight back to shredding! That's what the fuck I'm talking about. Any one of us would have been done dada, straight to the hospital. This kid was not even phased, how rad is that?

After several hours of shralping in the frigid cold and a long drive back home, this was waiting for my tired ass. I think this whole marriage thing is definitely going to work out.

More later.

Jay Adams and Jef Hartsel Present EZ Ryder

Been hearing a lot about this project for a while that my man Jef Hartsel is working on with the one and only Jay Adams, and now this thing that they've been fully dedicated to for so long is about to be unleashed upon the general public.

It's called EZ Ryder and they are doing their own line of custom complete skateboards.

The first offering is this limited edition handmade koa wood beauty of which there are only 50 made and they will be available May 1st.

Recently Jef and Jay went out on a test run with one of the new boards and our formerly Hirolling homie Ryan Toyama was there to snap photos of the session.

Then a couple of days ago I was down at A'ala Park and Jef showed up to give the board a run through there and also to let some of us sample it as well.

Silent John busted out a 360 ollie on flat among other trickery.

But it was Sean Reilly that really took to the koa wood the most out of everybody who jumped on it for a spin.
First thing he did was roll up to the bank on the Ewa side of the park in the King Street corner and attempt a rock to fakie.
Didn't get a photo of it but Conor got it on video and it only took him like three tries, which would be insane even on a regular board, let alone a tiny koa wood board with super skinny trucks, clay wheels and no griptape.

After the rock to fakie, Reilly was talked into trying a few more stunts on the board, three of which are photographed here for your viewing pleasure:

Jef's wife Eri snapped this pic like she'd been shooting skate photos her whole life.
Backside wallie floater off the lip, by this time Reilly was more comfortable on the board barefoot, check out the feet tatts.

I borrowed Jef and Eri's camera to get this photo of Sean's blunt to fakie but I cut his arm off.
This went down in about 5 tries.

The ender-ender however was this pivot to fakie that Reilly got perfectly as the lights were about to go out at the end of the night.
Can you see how small those trucks are and how fucking impossible this is?
Six tries, done.
Sean Patrick Reilly.

Extremely fun to ride and incredibly made, these things are super sick and I really hope this new company does well for Jef and Jay.
They will have a website up soon with more detials, or if you're on FaceBook I know that both of these dudes are regulars there (I'm still not on that shit and I never will be, but knock yourself out) so maybe you can hit them up that way for now.

Oh, and speaking of FaceBook, peep this quote from the Dogtown O.G. and original Skate Nazi himself, I think it sums up everything pretty good:

Red Curb Chronicles Video

This blast from the past is several years old but the amount of fun that was born from it is immeasurable.

Approximately five or six years ago a couple of us dudes went to an unnamed parking lot in Honolulu and decided to secure ourselves a very unsecured parking block.
We felt that it wasn't living up to it's potential simply having cars park up against it, and therefore we made the decision to liberate it and give it a new resting spot, the back of my car.
Also, it was decided to give this cold and bare parking block a new look that would make it more attractive, and of course more skateable.
A few colors were debated but we ended up settling on painting it classic red.

From it's new home we were able to take this shiny and slippery slab of concrete to several locations where the fun proceeded to rise at an exponential rate due to the spontaneity and creativity this new obstacle lent to itself when placed strategically at said locations.
Among the spots that this red curb was taken to were A'ala Park, the Makiki skatepark, the Pearl City skatepark, the Kaneohe skatepark, and the Mililani skatepark.

Reilly at A'ala.

Chad at Makiki.

Me at Pearl City.

Ryan at Kaneohe.

The Colonel's drop-in at Kaneohe is unfuckwittable!

Chad and I doubled up at Mililani.

It also got sessioned at a couple of parking lots along the way and eventually it ended up being used as the coping for a quarterpipe that we built at the Cannon Club on the slopes of Diamond Head.

Sean Reilly blunts over the top on the first and last full day of sessioning this wonderful piece of skate architecture.
Look at that fucking thing!
It was incredibly well built and more fun than you can begin to imagine.

Sadly, this is where the saga of the red curb ends.
Our brand new quarterpipe was up and skateable for approximately two days, then some authority figure scumbag decided to push it down the side of the hill and our beautiful creation became not so beautiful.

Anyway, the quarterpipe was completely shot (it sort of lived on as a mere shadow of it's former glorious self for a while but in it's broken and fucked up condition it was very, very shitty) but the curb itself remained at the Cannon Club for a while and a lot of people enjoyed it in various ways but this video showcases it's original glory the way it happened in the very beginning.

Originally shown in separate clips on the long since gone HIROLLINGMEDIA website, this edit is brand new and pieced together as one for the first time here.

Coincidentally, a few days ago I received the Bad Brains t-shirts to benefit Kenny that I had ordered from the Solitary Arts website and lo and behold there were some stickers that Yong-Ki had included in the package.

There were several dope designs that I am fully stoked on but the one that really hit home the hardest was this one:

Holy shit!
CURB THIEF!!!
This is incredible.
Talk about going full circle.

Anyway, hope the video provides enjoyment, inspiration or something like that.
Check out the rest of the shit on the Skate Nazi Vimeo page while you're at it if you already haven't.

Adrian Adrid: WHO DAT! video on Stereo website

Beyond stoked to see that our Hawaiian homie Adrian Adrid is the subject of a brand new video feature on the Stereo website called WHO DAT!

Peep this little slice of shred right here:

WHOA.
Not surprised at all because I know my man has been steady killing it for a long time now, but FUCKING A that was really, really good.

However, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the super impressive little clip you just saw right there did not take very long to film, and most of that shit was probably painfully easy for Adrian to throw out.

Mark my words.
You ain't seen shit yet.
This dude's taking over.

Stereo is tripping balls if they keep my man on flow status for very much longer, homie needs to be on that full program already.
Also, Dyson is way too fucking good to be amateur still.

But that's just me talking.
Hawaiian bias?
Maybe a little.
But seriously...

Adrian is taking over, get used to it!

Usually don't condone the use of sunglasses while shredding but fuck it, my man can pull it off.

L.A. High is such a sick spot, and Adrian treated that shit like his own personal skatepark.
This trick right here is fucking straight up baffling, and you should definitely re-watch that one line there where he does the wallie backside 180 at the end and take notes: that is how you put a fucking line together.

Dude can do feebles on ledges backside or frontside with ease.
In fact, I don't think there is anything in his repertoire that he doesn't do with ease.

In conclusion I think it's safe to say that I speak for everybody here in Hawaii and that we're all super proud of this dude and everybody is definitely looking forward to seeing a lot more well-deserved coverage from Adrian in the future.

Oh, and one more thing:
CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HUUUUUUUUU!
