This past Saturday in San Francisco the 6th annual Chili Bowl Skate Jam went down at the Potrero Skatepark.
North Shore ripper Lucas Hancock is currently residing in San Francisco and evidently skates the bowl at the Potrero Skatepark very well, check this video for confirmation, he's wearing the tie-dye shirt and tan pants.
As with any bowl jam situation there were some crazy collisions in there, I mean just look at Lucas in the main screen grab for the video.
That was seriously gnar, I mean really, look at this still again:
This is a hairy high-speed situation to be in.
Anyway, according to his brother Travis, Luke shook it off and ended the contest with a very respectable 5th place finish and quite possibly the trick of the day at the 6 minutes and 8 seconds point with that manual to five-o fakie.
Hawaiians be stepping up their game in the skateboarding world these days, always stoked to see dudes like this killing it on the big stage when given the chance.
EDIT:
Here is another little video from the Thrasher website with more footage from Lucas and the rest of the shredders.
Unless you've been living under a rock or you just simply don't give a shit, if you follow modern skateboarding closely you've most likely seen Dylan Rieder's brand spanking new Gravis promo video part that was recently put online.
This incredible video part, or short film as it's being hailed, is actually a free bonus in DVD form that comes packaged with the newest issue of The Skateboard Mag that features Dylan on the cover executing one of the nuttier tricks in this part, but if you don't subscribe or buy it in an actual skate shop the DVD won't be included.
Either way, this part is stellar on a number of different levels and as a whole I find it more enjoyable to watch than the entire new Transworld video, Hallelujah.
Here it is if you haven't seen it yet:
Also, there was a premiere party held in L.A. yesterday for this release and some of our homies were up in the mix, check out these photos taken by our bro Sam Muller from the premiere article on the Transworld website:
Gravis/Analog chief braddah Marky Mark Oblow along with Dylan and his supermodel lady friend.
Like I've already said, this part is stupendous, he has seriously surpassed the level of his Mind Field section and this recent effort is easily one of the best video parts of the year so far. Not easy to do in this day and age.
I must say that I am glad to see this dude has grown up and turned into quite a well-rounded ripper, he sure has come a long way from the Birdhouse and Osiris days.
Another instant classic from Bedpan Productions! Here's a little preview of Sean Reilly's next video hit Island Pyle, with an extra special Kenny Brimer tribute (featuring the world-famous and highly contagious Lenny Laugh) near the end.
Love this shit right here, can't wait for the full-length (no homo) offering.
Chilling at home resting up for tonight watching the news and what do you know? Guy Hagi from Hawaii News Now drops this little blurb about the Kenny Brimer Forever event that I hope to see everyone at tonight! Peep the video straight off the TV:
Pretty fucking cool I must say. I hope a bunch of people saw that shit and it makes just that many more people show up and support tonight! See you there.
So I finally copped the September issue of Transworld, time to post up the scans of Jarold and Adrian's check outs, so psyched on these!
First off, peep Jarold here with the crooked grind pop-over wonderfully photographed by the homie Sam Muller.
Good shit.
Fuck yeah, my man represented Hawaii so hard with this! Check the piece Sean Reilly wrote describing Jarold, so perfect. J. Webb is awesome for rocking the APB Ikaika helmet t-shirt, speaking on living aloha, shouting out spam musubis, big upping Sean Reilly as street skater of the year, and last but not least: oofing chicks!
Garrenz-ball-barrenz that's the only time in the history of Transworld, or any other skate mag for that matter, where somebody used the word OOF when referencing boning. Not to mention he lists his home as MILILANI even though he lives in L.A. now, that's what's up!
Always rep Hawaii even if you move away son, I'm talking to you Ryan Spencer. We know you live in Huntington now but you coulda at least mentioned Maui somewhere in your check out, I'm just sayin'.
Then we have Adrian with a big burly frontside 180 ollie (the hard way) over the famous kinked black marble hubba in NYC, this photo was also shot by Sam Muller:
Hell yeah, Adrian repping the north shore as always, HALEIWA gets a shout out, not only that but Shark's Cove as well! Also stoked to see my man with the APB stickers in both his chillin' pic and his action flick as well. Looks like photo incentive material there, Chad!
Anyway, big up to both of these dudes for continuing to KILL it on the big stage and also for always representing Hawaii to the fullest.
Hot off the presses and finally into my grubby paws as of yesterday is the newest issue of Contrast Magazine, and you can get yours now at finer establishments around Honolulu including APB, In4mation, and Fitted Hawaii.
Sick cover, Waikiki at night.
A few months ago I interviewed the homie Rip-san via instant messenger and there's a little bit of it here with a picture that Jef Hartsel took when Rip was staying at his house a while back.
Pretty funny to know that he learned how to play quarters here in Hawaii back when he was like 15 years old. I was hyped that Mark and the dudes from Contrast were into the idea of doing this little piece and let me contribute to the mag again.
This next shit was too big to get a good scan so I took a picture of it instead.
APB ads are steady killing it in every issue of Contrast so far! Check out Johnny here with the stylish powerslide somewhere down Tantalus if I'm not mistaken. HAHAHA, Silent Mode, that's perfect. Another incredible photo by Mark Kushimi.
Really moved and touched by this full page dedication to the life of our brother Kenny!
Also they put this Kenny memorial on the back cover. This is incredible and words cannot express how stoked I was to see this when I flipped the mag over for the first time.
Glad to see a local publication that isn't wack and full of bullshit continue to kill it! Word to Mark, Lyle, Daniel, Zen, Lance, Jason, Race, Cassy and everyone else at Contrast for continuing to put out this printed gem, it may sound corny but it's still rad to be able to hold a magazine in your hands in this day and age, so thanks!
Haven't seen the actual issue of the magazine anywhere here in Hawaii yet, but I did stumble upon these pictures yesterday that were posted on the Alien Workshop L.A. shop blog, I guess Jarold works there or something.
Anyway:
Adrian!
Jarold!
Been waiting to see this shit but we're usually an issue behind the mainland when it comes to skate mags. In case you're wondering about which mag these check outs are from it's the September issue of Transworld with Torey Pudwill on the cover.
Been prowling Borders as well as Barnes and Noble for this issue and as soon as I get it I will post full scans of these because these deserve to be seen in all of their full glory.
I guess they'll be showing this as one of those commercials during the Battle At The Berrics 3 that's going on right now. Anyway, it's always great to see more Dyson action. Cheeeee!
Happy birthday to my brother Kenny, he would have been 37 years old today.
Tonight some of us are going to skate at A'ala Park, surely a couple of beverages might be involved. I for one know that The Blazer wouldn't have it any other way.
Alright, so this Kenny Brimer Forever event that has been in the works for a minute is now definitely confirmed as a go for Friday night August 20th and it will be happening at Ka Restaurant and Lounge at Ward Center from 10PM until 2AM
Please help spread the word about this so that we can pack this joint because all proceeds from this event will go towards helping with the costs for Kenny's Celebration Of Life Memorial which is to be held sometime in the near future at a yet to be established location.
Anyway, this night is going to be 10 dollars at the door and when you consider the cause you'll be helping and the fact that dudes like DJs Toad One and Manifest will be spinning Kenny's favorite tunes all night long, the shit will be banging no doubt!
Big mahalos to all involved who are helping to make this happen and we all hope to see a massive turnout for this special night.
I definitely fucks with a few skate nerd type blogs out there in the stratosphere, but my absolute two favorite ones are The Chrome Ball Incident and Boil The Ocean.
Talk about killing it, these two are a couple of the first skate sites I check on my daily Internet prowl.
However there is another skate blog that is definitely in my rotation and coming on strong as of late and it's called Vert Is Dead, same kind of nostalgic throwback deal as Chrome Ball but definitely not as wordy and scholarly as Boil The Ocean.
Anyway, super duper stoked to see this cat Justin had devoted this entire week to paying tribute to New Deal's classic 1994 video Children Of The Sun with a different ND rider each day!
Sick ad from an issue of Thrasher back in 1994, forgot all about this one!
By the way, Rene's part in Children Of The Sun was the ender and if you don't remember it or never saw it, here it is:
Speaking of my boy Cuzzo, I just want to say that not too many dudes from Hawaii have ever done it as big as Rene did. Yeah, a few local cats are now or have gotten sponsored by big companies in the past, shit a few have even turned pro or will in the near future, but how many of these guys are gonna do or in Cuzzo's case, did all of this right here?
This shit right here? Trading card? Are you kidding me?
Damn! 6th member of New Kids On The Block??? My man was killing it!
THIS SHIT??? Cover of Slap??? One of the best they ever put out? Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeit...this can't be fucking faded on any level. Period.
This shit here?? Cover of 411? Just like Slap Magazine, they don't even make that shit anymore! Two fucking legendary mediums right there. Covered. Literally.
And last but definitely not least, how many of you dudes out there can say that somebody in your crew has had a Pro Spotlight in Transworld?
I sure can. Not only that but a fucking CENTERFOLD AT A'ALA PARK, FOOL! Shut down the studio!
Big up to Vert Is Dead for the killing the posts this week and also never-ending props to Cuzzo for killing it not only then but now as well. Proud to call you brother, brother!
Never forget! All Kenny all the time! My man Mako recently sent me some awesome photos that he took of Kenny. I had seen some of these before but some I had not and I wanted to share them with everyone so here they are:
DOMO ARIGATOU to Mako Ozaki for the incredible images.
Also, want to let everyone know that there is an event being planned right now for Friday, August 20th to remember Kenny and also raise funds to benefit his lady Lillie. It will be held at Ka Restaurant in Ward Center, which is on the second floor next to Borders Books and Music and it will go from 10PM until 2AM There will be a 10 dollar charge at the door and all proceeds will go to Lillie, so let's all spread the word and pack this place as much as possible!
From here on in let each keystroke I now type be a black arrow of death sent straight through the hearts of all those who still insist on kooking it.
THE SKATE NAZI EXPLAINED.
First of all, let's just get this out of the way right quick. I mean, it should be fairly obvious to most people familar with modern American pop culture where the inspiration for the moniker "Skate Nazi" originates from. If you aren't a Seinfeld fan, or you happen to live in a country where the humor of Jerry and the gang doesn't translate well, the name has absolutely nothing to do with Nazi Germany or anything even remotely close or pertaining to anything Nazi related. It comes from one of the greatest supporting players on one of the greatest programs in the history of American television, the Soup Nazi.
In September of 2006 my dear friend Kenneth Brimer and I went to Chicago to visit our homie Chane Wilson who was living there at the time. One of our friends in New York City, Sean Kelling, suggested that we fly in for the weekend to hang out and kick it with a bunch of our other friends from Hawaii who now reside in NYC. The airfare was cheap so we went early on a Friday morning and flew back to Chicago the following Monday. Even our boy Chad Hiyakumoto trekked all the way from Hawaii to NYC for the weekend, also our friend Manny flew in from San Francisco, and with them and all of our other transplanted New York ohana from Hawaii, we had a pretty big posse in the city for those three days.
Anyway, Kenny and Chane on the loose together? With Manny in the mix? In Manhattan? Forget about it. They were all about getting fucking wasted. They brought their boards, but they sure didn't give a shit about skating that weekend. Don't get me wrong, Chad and I were also very much looking forward to partying, but to us skateboarding was definitely the more important aspect of being in town that weekend. I made sure that we hooked up daily with Andy Henrie and Sean, and I also made sure that they were not only taking us to places like Max Fish and Motor City, but that they were also taking us to some goddamned skate spots. I was so on top of that shit. I was the one who woke up first every day and cracked the motherfucking whip to get the shred shit going. In fact I was so militant about this daily business that our friend Rhandy Tambio said to me "Dude, you're like a fucking skate nazi, damn!"
So there you have it.
THESE PEOPLE ARE NEAR AND DEAR TO THE SKATE NAZI'S COLD BLACK HEART.
